Coffee farmers around the world are looking for sustainable solutions that will allow them to continue producing coffee in a changing climate. In Sumatra, coffee producers received targeted support to implement the sustainable practices they wish to adopt. <\/strong><\/p>\n

As a green coffee importer, <\/span>Sucafina in Indonesia<\/span><\/a> works with two cooperatives in Kerinci, Indonesia, to support coffee farmers directly by financing projects through the sale of their coffee. Interestingly, the partnership is entirely driven by the needs of the producers themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

Avocado as a shade tree<\/h2>\n

That is how the coffee farmers of <\/span>Koerintji Barokah Bersama Cooperative<\/span><\/a> in 2021 <\/span>Rikolto<\/span><\/a>. This Belgian nonprofit organization works to improve producers\u2019 access to food. The KBBC farmers were eager to plant avocado trees as shade crops. In addition, selling the avocados would provide an extra source of income and nutrition for their families. However, obtaining affordable, high-quality avocado seedlings proved difficult. <\/span> <\/p>\n

Stronger Together<\/h2>\n

Rikolto reached out to Sucafina in Indonesia, which purchases green coffee from KBBC. As a result, KBBC\u2019s coffee farmers received an avocado seedling through Rikolto for every bag of Sucafina specialty coffee sold. The <\/span>project<\/span><\/a> was so successful that by 2022, KBBC had enough avocado seedlings for all its members and was ready for a new project.<\/span><\/p>\n

The focus shifted to compost. Indonesian coffee farmers want to improve the quality of their coffee cherries in the coming years, but chemical fertilizers are often too expensive for them to purchase. The new project focuses on the construction of <\/span>composting facilities<\/span><\/a> at the processing stations of KBBC and a second cooperative, the Ribang Gayo Musara Cooperative. <\/span> <\/p>\n

These facilities will process pulp and other byproducts from the <\/span>coffee processing<\/span><\/a> into a nutrient-rich fertilizer that farmers can apply to their coffee trees.<\/span><\/p>\n
