In 2021, Nicky and Leonie opened their coffee bar, Frank & Charlie, in what was then a deserted alleyway in the heart of Enschede. Behind the eye-catching pink front door, they combine specialty coffee with colorful fusion cuisine, homemade sweets, and unique drinks. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Nicky Lucius is from Brabant, while Leonie Hulselmans was born in Twente but grew up in the Randstad. Leonie previously owned the Kek coffee bar in Delft. After selling it, they moved together to Twente, where they settled on a farm. <\/p>\n\n

What they missed there were places to get good coffee. \u201cFive years ago, there wasn\u2019t a single specialty coffee shop<\/a> to be found in all of Twente,\u201d says Leonie. Instead of returning to the Randstad, they decided to start a place like that themselves. Frank & Charlie opened in August 2021. <\/p>\n\n

The name was deliberately not chosen to reflect the owners\u2019 names. \u201cIt should feel like you\u2019re visiting Frank & Charlie. You\u2019re free to decide for yourself who Frank & Charlie are to you. It\u2019s not about us.\u201d <\/p>\n\n

Your own little bubble in the city<\/h2>\n\n

For the business, a blank wall in a small alley was knocked down and converted into an entrance. The pink front door has since become one of Frank & Charlie\u2019s landmarks. <\/p>\n\n

Inside, the style is colorful, eclectic, and homey, featuring natural materials like wood and stone. Nicky and Leonie describe the atmosphere as a bit like a beach bar in the middle of the city, complete with great music<\/em>. \u201cYou walk down a deserted alley, and then suddenly\u2014BAM!\u2014there\u2019s our bright pink front door. When you\u2019re here, you forget all about the hustle and bustle of the city for a moment.\u201d <\/p>\n\n

Another distinctive feature is the open workstations. Guests can watch the barista at work, see how juice is pressed at the juice bar, and watch the homemade cakes being prepared in the microbakery. The kitchen is also open. \u201cThere\u2019s always something to see, taste, and experience.\u201d <\/p>\n\n

“We want our guests to take a break from their daily routine and everyday worries,” says Leonie. “We hope that the music and the decor will remind them of a vacation and offer them surprising food and drinks\u2014in terms of flavor, freshness, and, of course, presentation. We love color! <\/em>“It’s important to us that it stays natural. We work a lot with dried flowers, exotic fruits, and herbs.” <\/p>\n\n

Coffee, cocoa, and hojicha<\/h2>\n\n

In addition to specialty coffee, Frank & Charlie has expanded its beverage menu in recent years. For example, they make their own hojicha chai with fresh chai spices<\/a> and house-made soft drinks, including ginger beer and cherry-almond soda with maple cold foam<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

In addition to a version made with Callebaut chocolate, the shop also offers a hot chocolate made with 100 percent ceremonial cacao<\/a>. For this, the shop collaborates with Pure Kakaw and uses cacao from Matagalpa, Nicaragua. <\/p>\n\n

You’ve got to try this<\/h2>\n\n

Frank & Charlie\u2019s cuisine is fusion and draws inspiration from various international cuisines. For example, the breakfast menu features the NY Breakfast brioche with spinach, pickled red onion, scrambled eggs, cheese, bacon-chorizo jam, and spicy mayonnaise<\/strong>. For lunch, there\u2019s an Asian karaage chicken & egg sando with Japanese karaage chicken, furikake-seasoned egg, coleslaw, and sriracha<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

“We deliberately didn’t use our own names\u2014it’s not about us. You can decide for yourself who Frank & Charlie are to you.” <\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n

Nicky and Leonie\u2019s personal recommendation? \u201cDefinitely a nice cup of coffee. Then a sourdough pita with halloumi, spicy labneh, peach salsa, and hot honey. Finish off with a refreshing mango lassi and a slice of homemade carrot cake.\u201d <\/p>\n\n

Other treats from our in-house microbakery include banana bread, brownies, vegan blondies, taro cheesecake with black sesame crumble, and Finnish apple pie.<\/p>\n\n
