Sage The Luxe Brewer Thermal review

The Sage The Luxe Brewer Thermal is Sage’ s newest filter coffee machine and succeeds the popular Precision Brewer Thermal. At first glance, the difference seems mostly cosmetic, but in daily use it appears that Sage has made clear choices. Less complex on the outside, more calm in use, while the technical capabilities have largely been retained.

Design and construction quality

If you put the Luxe Brewer next to the Precision Brewer, you immediately notice that the design has become more refined. The machine looks less clunky and fits better visually into modern kitchens. The bottom dimensions have remained almost the same, but the tighter lines and updated finish make it feel more compact. Sage opts for a gray handle and lid on this model versus black on the Precision Brewer.

Removable water tank and updated display

An important practical difference is the removable water tank. With the Precision Brewer, it was attached, which made cleaning less pleasant. With the Luxe Brewer, you simply remove the tank from the machine, which makes cleaning a lot easier. The display has also been significantly modernized. The display is brighter and clearer, making the operation feel more modern.

Fewer brewing programs, more overview

Whereas the Precision Brewer worked with six brewing methods (3 preset, custom, pour over and cold brew), the Luxe Brewer has three more: brew, cold brew and custom. That seems like a step backward, but in practice it’s an improvement. The standard brew mode brews coffee according to SCA guidelines, with correct brewing time and brewing temperature. So at the push of a button you can brew a properly extracted cup of filter coffee, without having to think about settings. Interestingly, no blooming is used here. Our advice is therefore to choose a custom program for freshly roasted coffee. So with the custom mode you can experiment and fine-tune yourself, depending on the coffee. New is the delayed start. So you can have your coffee ready first thing in the morning when you wake up.

Full control with custom settings

Under the customize feature, full control has been retained. An important part of this is blooming. During the blooming phase, a small amount of water is dripped over the ground coffee. This allows carbon dioxide gases, which are still present especially in freshly roasted coffee, to escape. Without blooming, the water can flow unevenly through the coffee, negatively affecting extraction.

Blooming is basically a short pause in the brewing process, usually between 30 and 40 seconds. With the Luxe Brewer, you set both the bloom volume and the bloom time yourself, which ensures a more even extraction and a cleaner flavor profile.

In addition to blooming, you can also set the brewing temperature and flowrate. The flow rate determines how quickly the water is distributed over the coffee. A lower flowrate allows for longer contact time and higher extraction. This works well for lightly roasted coffees, which often require a longer extraction. With dark-roasted coffees, too long an extraction can actually result in extra bitters. By combining the parameters of temperature and flow rate, you can fine-tune the brewing profile to each coffee.

Steep & Release at small quantities

One feature that is especially valuable with smaller batches is Steep & Release. For smaller volumes, the machine first holds the water in the filter basket, allowing the coffee to fully steep before releasing the steep. This works similarly to a manual immersion brewing method such as a Clever Dripper. This gives you a more even extraction with small amounts than with a direct pass. This feature works automatically and contributes to more consistent results with one or two cups of coffee. However, you can also choose to let the coffee flow through at once here. If you brew the coffee with a lid on the pot, it will run through and without a lid you choose the steep & release function.

Cold brew function: accomplished and thoughtful

The Luxe Brewer’s cold brew function is not a quick marketing option, but a full-fledged brewing method. The machine offers this mode up to 600 milliliters compared to 450 ml with the Precision Brewer. If you fill more water, the cold brew option is not displayed. The method of operation is well thought out: you place the pitcher without a lid under the flat bottom filter, allowing the water to remain in the filter and fully extract the coffee. After the extraction time you set, the coffee runs through into the jug.

The extraction time is widely adjustable, from relatively short times to very long cold brew extractions that can reach many hours. This allows you to make a concentrated cold brew suitable for diluting, as well as a milder version for immediate use. The result is a true full-immersion cold brew, with depth and balance, not a shortened or watered-down version.

SAGE THE LUXE BREWER REVIEW pouring

Filters and thermos jug

As with the Precision Brewer, the Luxe Brewer comes with two filter options: a flat bottom filter for larger quantities and a conical filter for smaller batches. The thermos is identical to that of the previous generation and performs excellently. The larger the batch, the better the heat retention.

One minor downside is that the conical filter seems to be a little looser in the filter carrier than on the previous model. When wetting a paper filter and emptying it, you have to hold it for a while to prevent it from coming along.

Illogical scaling of water tank

One persistent flaw is the scale on the water tank. The markings are at 150, 500, 1000, 1500 and 1800 milliliters, with a few dashes in between. These dashes do not logically correspond to fixed milliliter numbers. There are as many dashes between 150 and 500 milliliters as between 500 and 1000 milliliters, even though the volume is much larger there.

On top of that, these markings are based on use with the supplied water filter in the tank. If you don’t use a water filter, the actual volume differs from what the scale indicates. This makes it difficult to accurately measure out water. For those who work with fixed brewing ratios and weigh coffee and water based on grams and milliliters, this remains inconvenient. A scale per 100 milliliters would have been more appropriate here. In this case, the number of “cups” indicated by the machine is simply less relevant. One solution to this is to measure/weigh your water beforehand.

Conclusion Sage The Luxe Brewer Thermal review

The Sage The Luxe Brewer Thermal is not a radical innovation, but a clear refinement of an already strong filter coffee machine. The operation has become simpler, the design quieter and more modern, while technical control has been retained. Those who want to brew good filter coffee without thinking are just as comfortable here as the enthusiast who wants to fine-tune every detail. In our opinion, this machine is among the best filter coffee machines available. Combine this with a good grinder and freshly roasted coffee and you will enjoy the tastiest coffee every day.
